Objectives of the conference

Access to safe and legal abortion in Europe is an issue that is through debate and involves various institutions, particularly while new members are joining the Union.

This political issue is nevertheless a real challenge to Europe: the observance, both for member countries and for institutions, of fundamental rights stated by the various international conventions.

The right for women to control their own body, to choose their pregnancies, and access to care for reproductive health is constituent of the establishment of an egalitarian society and, as such, it must be recognized as a right of full enjoyment.

The right to have an abortion under good psychological, health and economic conditions must be reaffirmed as a vital condition to countries’ evolution. It is a democratic issue, an issue of equality between women and men in Europe and elsewhere.

During this two day conference, we hope to cross the various views of different European countries for practical application of this right to all women in Europe. We hope that the extensive moments of debate planned will provide an opportunity to identify the various issues, one country at a time, and ease cooperation and exchanges between doctors, associations, political and institutional organisations.

Unambiguously affirming that the exercise of this fundamental right to control your body requires a clear separation of politics and religion is central, at a time when the latter tends to take precedence over the interests of society by reducing it to a question of morality.

With our partners, this conference was conceived as resolutely turned towards Europe and its members, in a community and supportive impulse for the recognition of sexual and reproductive rights during the French Presidency of the European Union.

To all women in Europe !
